Nimbus ST42 Boat Overview

The Nimbus ST42 (Sport Tender 42) is a 12.7-metre walk-around day boat for up to 12 people, built for the sort of day where being on the boat itself is the plan. No marina to reach, no schedule to keep.

Days that start with a swim and end with the light changing on the way home. A late breakfast on the aft deck. Lunch at anchor. A cruise back with the sun dropping behind you. That’s the brief the whole boat was designed around.

Every decision on the ST42 traces back to one question: what makes the best days at sea genuinely good, for everyone on board?

Space to gather that doesn’t feel cramped once six or eight people are on board. Room to move without squeezing past someone. Shade that covers more than a token corner of the deck. More than one spot to stretch out and do nothing. Fridge space sized for a full day of food and drink, not a weekend’s worth of snacks. A proper outdoor galley, barbecue included.

A swim platform wide enough for several people to use at once. A stowage area big enough for the toys and gear that actually go on a boat like this, opening on a hydraulic lift so it stays usable no matter what’s stacked in there. Nothing here is decorative.

Nimbus ST42 for Sale

Wide side decks. Treads sized so two people can pass without one of them turning sideways. Bow to stern, every deck connects and every deck is dimensioned for actual use, not just access.

Nimbus ST42 Starboard Side

Furniture is sized for use. Decks are sized for movement. The transitions between spaces are sized for ease. The result is a deck plan that opens up the second you step aboard and stays open as the day moves from cruising to swimming to lunch and back again.

1. Walk-around design – Move freely from bow to stern on uninterrupted side decks, built for confidence underway.

2. The social heart – An open cockpit where seating, shade, and galley work as one connected space.

3. Built for real conditions – A deep-V hull tuned for Nordic waters, holding its line when conditions turn.

Onboard Systems & Comfort

The aft deck is where most of the day happens on the ST42, and it’s built to work at every speed and in every mood. Three sofas and a large table, with the whole arrangement, sofas, table, and canvas sun cover, reconfiguring in seconds using simple handles.

Bow View

Face the seating forward for a fast cruise across open water. Lay the sun pad flat once the anchor’s down and everyone’s dried off from a swim. Turn the table face-to-face for lunch. One space, three completely different uses, no compromise on any of them.

The canvas sun cover earns its place too. It stretches across a large portion of the deck when the sun’s overhead, then folds back no fuss. Shade when you need it, sky when you don’t.

New to the 42 series is a foldable side balcony on the starboard side. Fold it out at anchor and the lounge extends over the water, the deck stepping down almost to sea level. Kids can step straight off the swim platform onto the deck. A neighbouring boat can tie up alongside and guests step across in one move. Fold it back in and the ST42 keeps its clean underway lines.

Boat Underway

The outdoor galley sits aft: drawers for cutlery and crockery, a sink with hot water, space for a gas stove or electric grill. Refrigeration is split across multiple compartments so fresh, cold, and frozen don’t have to compete.

Aft stowage runs to 2,500 litres on the outboard configuration, opened hydraulically from the deck. Room for a paddleboard, wakeboards, an inflatable tender, spare wetsuits, and all the towels that never quite fit anywhere else. The aft seating even converts stowage into extra seating.

It’s a boat that gives you the whole day, morning through evening, and turns the trip home into the story everyone tells afterwards.

Built to run dry and stable past 45 knots

The ST42’s hull is an air-lubricated, twin-stepped design with a sharp bow entry and a low planing threshold, built to stay dry and composed at 45+ knots and everywhere below it.

At the helm, two routes: Mercury Joystick Piloting with an integrated bow thruster across the Mercury outboard range, or Volvo Penta inboard power with the assisted docking package and joystick control. Either way, tight manoeuvring stops being a two-person job.

Nimbus ST42 Outboard Engines

For owners who want more under the throttle, the ST42 can be specified with dual Mercury V10 425hp engines.

The Nimbus interface is built around what a driver needs mid-passage: engine data, interceptor trim, depth, split-screen charts, tank levels, and power and shore status, each one a single reach from the wheel.

The foredeck

Room for a divan and a sun bed, not just a place to perch. The wide gunwale and 40mm stainless steel railing mean the foredeck works as a genuine second seating area, away from the noise of the main lounge. A large loading hatch drops straight down to the forward cabin, so gear and provisions take the most direct route on board.

The galley

The outdoor galley lives on the aft deck: drawers for cutlery and crockery, a sink with hot water, space for a gas stove or electric grill, and refrigeration split into separate compartments for fresh, cold, and frozen.

Swim platform

The swim platform is a double-mould construction, integrated structurally into the hull rather than bolted on as an afterthought. An optional hydraulic system drops it to passerelle height for boarding from a quay or a dinghy, and an aft deck shower rinses the salt off before anyone heads back to the lounge.

Below deck

The forward cabin connects to the foredeck through a large loading hatch, keeping gear and provisions on the shortest possible route down. Two separate cabins sleep four: a double forward, a double amidships. Improved sound insulation keeps things quiet at cruising speed and at anchor. The bathroom is a proper one, standing height, its own door, a separate toilet and shower.

At the helm

The same twin-stepped, air-lubricated hull that keeps the ST42 dry at speed also keeps it composed at anchor and everywhere in between.

Custom Nimbus helm seats bring lateral support to reduce fatigue on longer runs. The Nimbus interface is split by function: a start page that sets the tone before you’re into the system proper, a homepage for stereo and values, a driving page for engine data, interceptors, depth, and split-screen charts, a tank page that tells you when it’s time to find a harbour, and a power page covering batteries, shore connection, and charger status.

Who is the Nimbus ST42 for?

The ST42 is a spacious, adaptable day boat for full days at sea with the people you’d choose to spend them with. It’s built on seaworthiness, considered design, and Scandinavian craft rather than shortcuts.

It suits owners who want one boat to handle a lazy afternoon swim, a long day offshore, and an unfamiliar harbour at dusk, all with the same composure. Owners who’ll use the same boat for a swim off the platform, a barbecue at anchor, a fast run across the bay, and a quiet coffee on the foredeck before anyone else is up. And owners who recognise that the design thinking behind the ST42 is exactly why all of that works without a second thought.

FAQs

What’s the top speed of the Nimbus ST42?
45+ knots, depending on engine choice and load. The twin-stepped, air-lubricated hull is designed to hold that pace without losing composure in a chop.

Is the ST42 suitable for UK and European waters?
Yes. It’s built to design category B10 / C12, with a deep-V hull developed for Nordic conditions, so it’s well suited to the coastal waters most UK owners actually use.

What engine options are available on the ST42?
Three as standard: Mercury Verado V8 (2x300hp), Mercury Verado V10 (2x400hp), or Volvo Penta D4 DPI (2x320hp). Owners wanting more power can specify dual Mercury V10 425hp engines.

What makes the ST42 different from a standard day boat?
The walk-around layout. Wide, uninterrupted side decks connect the bow, cockpit, and swim platform, so the whole boat stays usable rather than just the cockpit. The foldable side balcony, hydraulic aft stowage, and full outdoor galley extend that further.
